The Crown and Anchor is at the bottom of the High Street, opposite the Town Hall and is a nice, old-fashioned sort of place. The staff are friendly and there is a really pleasant patio to the rear. The menu is what you would expect; 'pub grub' at a decent price. The pub is located opposite Abbey House (the mayor's official residence).

William Walker MVO (1869–1918) was an English diver famous for shoring up the southern and eastern sides of Winchester Cathedral.

He was born William Robert Bellenie, in Newington, Surrey, England, in 1869. Around 1900, he adopted the name William Bellenie-Walker, eventually dropping the Bellenie part to be known as Walker.

In 1887, he began diver training at Portsmouth Dockyard. He worked through the roles of diver's attendant and diver's signal man, passing his medical exam and deep-water test to qualify as a deep-water diver in 1892.[1]

In his time, William Walker was the most experienced diver of Siebe Gorman Ltd. In 1906–1911, working in water up to a depth of six metres (20 feet), he shored up Winchester Cathedral, using more than 25,000 bags of concrete, 115,000 concrete blocks, and 900,000 bricks.

Before his work, the cathedral had been in imminent danger of collapse as it sank slowly into the ground, which consisted of peat. To enable bricklayers to build supporting walls, the groundwater level had to be lowered. Normally, the removal of the groundwater would have caused the collapse of the building. So, to give temporary support to the foundation walls, some 235 pits were dug along the southern and eastern sides of the building, each about six metres deep. Walker went down and shored up the walls by putting concrete underneath them. He worked six hours a day—in complete darkness, because the sediment suspended in the water was impenetrable to light.

After Walker finished his work, the groundwater was pumped out and the concrete he had placed bore the foundation walls. Conventional bricklayers then were able to do their work in the usual way and restore the damaged walls.

During his time working at Winchester, Walker cycled home, 150 miles to Croydon and back, each weekend to see his family.[2] He married twice. His first wife died before he began work at Winchester. He married his second wife, sister of his first, in 1907, and had several children during his years working at Winchester.

To celebrate the completion of the work, a thanksgiving service, led by the Archbishop of Canterbury, was held on July 15, 1912. At this, Walker was presented with a silver rose bowl by King George V. Newspaper reports at the time remarked that this was the second time Walker had met George V, the first being when the king was a naval cadet and Walker was his diving instructor.[3]

Later, Walker was honoured by being appointed a Member of the Royal Victorian Order (MVO).

An interview that Walker gave to the Hampshire Observer in 1911[1] gives insight into his work. In it, Walker reveals that, unlike some other divers, he had never worked on any treasure dives. Other aspects of his work:

* Rescue work, December 1896, at the River Level Colliery near Aberent, Wales, when the pit was flooded and six men and boys drowned.
* Work on the building of the Blackwall Tunnel, 1891–1897.
* Being foreman in charge of works on the construction of the new naval docks in Gibraltar.
* Work on the construction of the jetty for the Royal Victoria Dock Granary, 1905.
* Emergency work, which called him away from Winchester, on the wreck of the SS Dordone in Newport.
* Work with Sir Leonard Hill developing linear decompression tables.

Part of the interview article: "In cold water diving he [William] explained what a man has to contend with is the pressure. At Gibraltar he says ‘two of my men died through pressure of water." (Hampshire Observer, 2 September 1911)

In response to questions about his work on Winchester, William says "'It was not difficult. It was straightforward work, but had to be carefully done'. He went on to say that Mr Jackson had told him that he was very pleased with the work and that he had done what no other man had done—that was he had laid the foundations of a whole cathedral, Walker said 'I am proud of the honour'". (Hampshire Observer, 2 September 1911)

Walker died during the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918 and is buried in Beckenham Cemetery, London.

It is a large establishment and there is a terrace out the back where you can drink and eat whilst watching the ducks on the river Itchen. The food is good. It is also a very popular place in the evening for the youth of the city.

This inn seems to have been built by the lord of the manor of Alton Eastbrook, Hyde Abbey, in the early 1500s. It was named the Pelican, probably because the symbol of the then Bishop of Winchester, Bishop Fox, was a pelican.

At the Dissolution, the manor came into the hands of the crown and so the inn, very wisely, changed its name to the Crown.

As the premises were built on a corner, there was not much room and they were always leased together with Crown Close – later the site of the Assembly Rooms, Curtis Museum and hospital.

At the Restoration, the new innholder was Jonathan Sly and he was assessed for 7 hearths - the smallest number for Alton’s inns. When Jonathan died, his wife, Joan, took over. She was a member of the Gates family, many of whom were leading Quakers, and was excommunicated and sent to Winchester Prison for about three weeks.

One benefit of the position of the Crown was that Crown Close was used for the Alton Eastbrook fair which, until the mid-1700s, took place on St Lawrence’s Day (10 August). This must have brought a lot of trade to the inn. The date of the fair was changed to Michaelmas to avoid harvest time.

During the French Wars, an outhouse at the Crown was used for French prisoners who were being escorted through the town. On one occasion, there was a breakout but they were captured and continued on their way.

Like the George and Swan, the Crown was acquired by the Hawkins family and then sold to Henry Hall. Together with the Swan, it was sold in 1903 to Courage & Co. Over the years there have been alterations and improvements but the carved beams put up in the early 1500s can still be seen in one of the main rooms.

10 High Street is the former home of the Andover Advertiser, founded by John Russell Fox, who produced the first edition at this address on 1 January 1858.
The premises were rebuilt by the Fox family 10 years later, but in the same year a new proprietor took over. In 1876, the paper changed hands again, to James Charles Holmes. The Holmes family then ran the Andover Advertiser for 110 years, until 1986. Since then, the paper’s format has changed from broadsheet to tabloid.

The 15th Century Grade II listed White Horse Inn is situated in between the picturesque villages of Thruxton and East Cholderton in the heart of the Test Valley.
Unbelivably the concrete wall on the left of the picture is the A303 which passes 20 feet from the front door and 20 feet above the pub. You may have passed this pub on the way to the south west and never realised it was there!

This was once a very important coaching stop on the London - Portsmouth road. The Hampshire/W. Sussex boundary runs through the middle of the pub. The parish of Liss has a tradition of "beating the bounds" and they used to put a boy into the oven at the Flying bull to beat the bounds as the parish boundary is reputed to run through the kitchen.

Weyhill Fair was the longest lived of any of the rural fairs and was actually three separate fairs held on 11th April, the last Friday in July and from October 9th to the 12th. It was held to the west of Andover on the Fair
Ground, a parcel of land at the junction of two ancient ways - the 'Gold road' from Holyhead which was reputedly used to carry Irish gold to south coast ports - and the Harrow Way, one of our oldest trade routes running from the West Country through the heart of Southern England to Dover. Weyhill was also at the junction of six other 'drift roads' to major settlements in the region.

Weyhill was the fair which provided the factual information upon which Thomas Hardy based his fictionalised account of wife-selling in The Mayor of Casterbridge. Thieves and vagabonds were drawn to the fair and often the only way to keep hold of your money was to sew it into the lining of your clothes. In its heyday it was a gigantic amalgam of stock market, superstore and theme park. There could be up to 100,000 sheep sold in a day; there were horse dealers and cattle sales, there were booths selling ales, cheese, jewellery, clothing and a great variety of household goods. There was a wide range of amusements including side shows, freak shows, boxing and wrestling booths and humble swings and roundabouts. Substantial stalls were built to house some of the established traders and these were eventually made permanent - some of these can still be seen on the site today.

JIMMY Dickinson holds a unique place in Pompey history. Many famous names in soccer have served their clubs with distinction and dedication but surely the most distinguished and loyal of all was 'Gentleman Jim.' He was one of the great names in football during the game's golden age after World War Two when crowds flocked back to soccer in their millions.
Born in Alton in 1925, Dickinson joined Pompey from Alton Youth Club having been discovered by his maths and sports teacher Eddie Lever, who later managed his old pupil at Fratton Park. After three years' national service in the Royal Navy, Dickinson
made his league debut against Blackburn Rovers at Fratton Park in 1946.

Having settled quickly into the side, he established the number six shirt as his own and helped steer Pompey to successive league championships with his other resplendent colleagues. His sound, consistent and unobtrusive performances earned him England recognition too - a total of 48 appearances for his country made him Pompey's most capped player of all time. More significantly he played 764 league games for Pompey - a record for one player at a single club which was not broken until Swindon's John Trollope went six better in 1980.

In addition to his remarkable playing career, Dickinson was a gentleman both on and off the pitch. He was never booked or sent off in 800 Pompey and England matches. His industrious and sure footed style at either wing-half or left-half is still happily remembered today by those who watched him in probably the best half-back line this country ever had alongside Jack Froggatt and Jimmy Scoular.

Dickson was a Pompey stalwart for almost 20 years. Awarded the MBE in 1964, he played his last match for the Blues a year later, helping Pompey to a 1-1 end-of-season draw at Northampton that secured safety from relegation. And when he retired from playing, his loyalty did not cease. He served Pompey as public relations officer and then secretary before reluctantly accepting the job he never wanted - that of Pompey manager - in May 1977. Relegation from the third division was avoided, but the next year Pompey dropped into soccer's basement.

The worry of managing the famous old club in the fourth division affected his health and sadly, after three heart attacks Jimmy died aged 57 in 1982. The famous Pompey Chimes rang hauntingly around St Mary's Church in Fratton at a packed memorial service for the much-loved legend. Portsmouth is a city of many famous names and one with which it is synonymous is that of Jimmy Dickinson. Gentleman Jim will be remembered in Pompey forever

Longparish is a most apt name for the village as it is, indeed, a long parish, winding and twisting for three miles along the Test. The name did not appear until the middle of the 16th century, at about the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries, before which it was known as Middleton (of Middletune).

The parish was formed from four ancient ‘tithings’, East and West Aston, Middleton and Forton. Apart from some postwar development of council housing, Longparish remains much as it has for centuries, with half-timbered, brick and flint cottages.

The stocks near the village church are, alas, not the original ones, but the old grindstone is. The "Ashburn Rest" seat, provided by a thoughtful Rev Burnaby-Green in 1886, was sited by the spring with a tin cup. It was a long walk to church for some.

The Plough inn dates back to 1721 according to parish records and can be found in the picturesque Test Valley village of Longparish. The inn is within casting distance of the river Test famous for its excellent fishing rights. The inn is also on the Test way making it an ideal watering hole for thirsty ramblers. A familiar sight at the inn is the webbed residents of Longparish who waddle over for a bite to eat from anyone who can bear to share their baguette! The Plough was sympathetically refurbished in late 2006 and has a warm, comfortable atmosphere with flagstone and oak floors complimented by leather chairs and subtle soft furnishings open log fires and superb food, wines and real ales.

The 16th century pub is at the heart of the village of Old Basing near Basingstoke in Hampshire.

It is a Grade II listed building and stands in one of Old Basing's picturesque thoroughfares - The Street.

The exact date that The Crown was built is not known, however it is believed that the inn dates from the time of the Civil War when Oliver Cromwell's Roundheads laid siege to the impressive Basing House, which was a very grand Tudor mansion.

The village lies on the A32 in the valley of the River Meon between West Meon and Exton. It has a church and a pub, the George and Falcon. There is an infrequent bus service from Bishop's Waltham to Petersfield. The village was by-passed by the former Meon Valley Railway (now a footpath and cycleway), which ran down the east of the valley.

The Hatchet Inn is a traditional family pub situated on the A27 between Romsey and Whiteparish in the little village of Sherfield English.

Paul and Mia Williamson and their son Justin are the new Landlords, having just taken over the lease, and they will be striving hard to maintain the excellent reputation that the Hatchet has for fine wines, ales and homecooked food making it a very popular venue for lunch, dinner and a social drink.

The Hatchet benefits from a large car park, secure garden with children's and toddlers play areas, making the Hatchet an ideal venue for a lazy summer's afternoon.

The Old Courthouse is on the north side of Cove Road. It was once known as The Anchor and then as The Jolly Farmer, but gets its current name from the fact courts were held in it when it was the Anchor. Amongst other judicial matters permission would be granted to the people of Cove to dig peat and gather fuel off Cove Common.

History

Around 1670 a ship called The Castle of Comfort, based in Southampton, was de-commissioned and broken up at nearby Portchester.

The ship was built in the early 1600's and was owned by a Privateer. It was a commercial ship sanctioned by the British Government and had spent it's life plundering treasures from South America.

A wealthy man from Medstead bought the main timbers to build a beer house, which locally became known as The Castle of Comfort.

Todays building was built on the site of the original Castle of Comfort in the early 1800's after fire destroyed the original. The old cellar still exists and probably has some of the orginal beams.

Still in Kingsclere here's a view of the village green. The road in the foreground used to be the busy A339 between Newbury and Basingstoke, now there is a bypass around the village which has turned the village centre into a peaceful place.

Light in Kingsclere erected to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria. It was originally fueled by gas from the villages gas works and later by electricity. These days it is not lit.
